Starfish poem

 THE  STARFISH  POEM

Once upon a time there was a wise man

who used to go to the ocean

to do his writing.

He had a habit of walking

on the beach

before he began his work.

One day he was walking along

the shore.

As he looked down the beach,

he saw a human

figure moving like a dancer.

He smiled to himself to think

of someone who would

dance to the day.

So he began to walk faster

to catch up.

As he got closer, he saw

that it was a young man

and the young man wasn't dancing,

but instead he was reaching

down to the shore,

picking up something

and very gently throwing it

into the ocean.

As he got closer he called out,

"Good morning! What are you doing?"

The young man paused,

looked up and replied,

"Throwing starfish in the ocean."

"I guess I should have asked,

why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?"

"The sun is up and the tide is going out.

And if I don't throw them in they'll die."

"But, young man, don't you realize that

there are miles and miles of beach

and starfish all along it.

You can't possibly make a difference!"

The young man listened politely.

Then bent down, picked up another starfish

and threw it into the sea,

past the breaking waves and said-

"It made a difference for that one."

questions: 1.what is the main message in this poem?

answer: "every little thing you do counts/ makes a different's"

Parihaka

Parihaka

What is the main message from this song?
It is basically telling you to fight for you rights but in a non violent peaceful way.  This song is also talking about how parihaka fought for their rights with peaceful protest.

What line explains their passive resistance method?

What does 'You can't pull out the roots' refers to?
This refers to when the people tried to take away their land and there culture away to (their roots).  No matter what happens don't let anyone take away who you are.

Give evidence of their determination:

How does this song show the significance of parihaka?
This song basically sings about the things that the parihaka people did and how they are here today.  It talks about there protest and the trials and challenges that they went through.

What makes a event significant?
When it is so powerful that the whole world admires it and makes it a memorable day.

How many people are affected?
the Maori and english soilders that died, and the familys that lost loved ones.

To what extent are people affected?
To the point that they need to be remember and admire for.  This basically means that they want to be known for what has happened, think about it and pass on the history to further generations to come.
